    Context of Team

Johnson Controls has access to a wide range of data related to buildings, including energy usage, equipment condition, operating costs, and overall building performance. Much of this data is derived from computer systems supplied by Johnson Controls that manage complex buildings (these computers are the “controls” within the corporate name Johnson Controls).  Data Analytics is a newly formed team tasked with aggregating this data and using contemporary analytics techniques to deliver value to our customers, including reduced energy usage.

    Context of Role

As Data Scientist, you will report to the Vice President, Data Analytics, and you will play a key role in creating a system to extract and process building-related data.  When built out, this system is expected to touch all of the more than 1,000,000 building services customers served by Johnson Controls around the globe, including iconic structures such as the Burj Khalifa, Petronas Towers, Shanghai World Financial Center, Empire State Building, and Willis Tower, as well as many leading universities, hospitals, sports complexes and other buildings that constitute the fabric of communities worldwide.

As a Data Scientist on our team, you are as excited as we are about the prospects of using data analytics to transform building operations and reduce energy usage. You are a creative problem-solver with a keen ability to see hidden problems, provide honest analysis, and use rigorous logic and methods to identify effective solutions. You handle ambiguity well, can make decisions without all the data, can shift gears comfortably and can effectively cope with change. You believe that the best work is done in teams – you’re seen as a cooperative peer; candid yet fair. You can manage multiple priorities simultaneously because of your excellent planning, organization and time management skills.

    Short-term expectations

    • Design, develop and evaluate highly innovative machine learning models for big data
    • Research and implement machine learning and statistical techniques to create scalable solutions to building-related problems
    • Work closely with data delivery teams to integrate solutions into tools used by Johnson Controls employees and customers
    • Build complex data sets from multiple data sources, both internally and externally

    Long-term expectations

    • Build alignment with multiple teams and departments to integrate our work smoothly with theirs, thereby eliminating duplication and redundancy
