and the HKS North Korea Study GroupABOUT PROFESSOR KIM HYUN SIKPROFESSOR
HYUN SIK KIM was born in 1932 in North Korea and is a veteran of the
Korean War. Kim later served as a PROFESSOR AT PYONGYANG UNIVERSITY OF
EDUCATION for 38 years. Starting in 1971, for 20 years, Kim worked as a
PRIVATE TUTOR TO KIM IL SUNG’S CHILDREN. In 1991, Kim defected to South
Korea and later worked as a researcher at the Unification Policy
Research Institute, headed by Hwang Jang-Yup. From 2003 to 2006, he
served as a visiting professor at Yale University, where he lectured on
North Korean topics, including the education system, people’s ways of
thinking, and North Korean ruling philosophy. He is currently a research
professor at George Mason University.
