    Surfing the Net at Work

As employees are given more powerful computing resources with modems and the ability to reach out into the Internet, more non-company related activities take place. Three issues arise. First, are employees surfing the Net instead of doing assigned work? Second, are these activities clogging the corporate networks, blocking access and using computing power needed for corporate activities? Third, even if computing is not interfering with work, are resources being used at a significant cost to the company for personal gain?

Companies need to thoroughly analyze how they want to handle these issues. Many PC users learned to use a mouse by playing “solitaire” on their PC. However, most companies either ban games altogether or only during work hours. Surfing the Net can often enhance technology skills and provide quick access to valuable information at minimal cost that would otherwise be unavailable, a desirable goal in our rapidly advancing technology-driven world.

When an employee is not meeting work goals and is performing below standards, managers have the obligation to address performance with that employee. Electronic distractions affecting performance should be treated as any other performance problem. Employees are responsible for performing good quality work efficiently within mandated time limits. Organizations usually have standards and job descriptions that an employee must meet. If Internet surfing is affecting job performance then the employer should proceed with its usual procedures.

Computer system congestion and cost of extra computing and on-line resources can be dealt with in many ways. Many companies allow employees to use company resources for charitable purposes such as maintaining mailing list databases. Generally, a brief corporate policy setting forth the parameters of such use along with a requirement that any project have management approval will keep this type of use in control. Any other significant non-company uses should also require management approval. Employees should be reminded of this requirement periodically.

    17. According to the preceding passage, which of the following statements is true?
Surfing the Net can enhance employees’ technology skills.
Most companies remove computer games such as “solitaire” from employees’ computers.
Surfing the Net provides access to information at no cost to companies’ resources.
As the use of computer resources increase, non-company related activities decrease.

The answer is A. The passage reads “Surfing the Net can often enhance technology skills”.

    18. According to the author of the preceding passage, which of the following can be a problem with computer resources in the workplace?
Net surfing unrelated to work activities
The unavailability of information on the net
    Both A and B
    Neither A nor B

The answer is A. The passage reads that surfing the Net can “provide quick access to valuable information” rather than implying that information is unavailable. The passage also describes three issues with “non-company related activities.”

    19. According to the preceding passage, which of the following is an advantage of the use of the Internet in the workplace?

As the use of computer resources increase, non-company related activities
    decrease.
Internet surfing makes employees happy, thereby improving job performance.
Surfing the Net can inexpensively access needed information.
Computer system congestion problems are generally alleviated.

The answer is C. The passage reads, “Surfing the Net can often enhance technology skills and provide quick access to valuable information at minimal cost that would otherwise be unavailable”.
